Since the 1990s, a large ‘reptilian’ creature has been sighted occasionally on Umbungi Island in West New Britain, Papua New Guinea
(PNG). Umbungi is on the south coast of West New Britain between Kandrian and Gasmata.
The creature was described as having a
long tail and a long neck and was 10–15 metres in length . . . It walked slowly on two legs and had smooth, shiny brown skin . . .
the sighting being made from a distance of about 50 metres.
Described like a living pterosaur
The psychologist was on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea, in 1971, when he saw a large flying creature that “looked prehistoric.”
It was nothing like a Flying Fox bat.
Research was done from 2005 to 2009; eyewitnesses were from 19 states: California, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Florida,
Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kansas, and
Washington State. The sightings themselves were from 1980 through 2008.

The "ropen" of Papua New Guinea seems to be a living pterosaur. It is certainly
no Flying Fox fruit bat.
