Dinosaur Bird in Western States

Pterosaur sightings, even when eyewitnesses use an expression like “dinosaur bird,” are common in the western United States, especially in California. This has been said to be related to the combination of high human population and large land area.

Pterodactyls in Southwest USA

[In Irvine, California] A huge pterosaur-like creature, in daylight, in August of 2007, flew into the wildlife refuge, crossing the road going north from the university campus (road on the west side of the sanctuary), and according to the anonymous eyewitness, the length of the flying creature was close to the width of the road (30 feet).

Washington State Sightings

According to the account of the teenager (in 2007, he told me about his experience) he heard a screech and saw two huge winged-creatures, less than a hundred feet away. He told me that their heads were four feet long. These two creatures were observed in the area for a number of days (warmer weather, mid-1980’s, Washington State).

From the professor who investigated, in 2007, another sighting area in Washington State: “I went on a short trip to the ______ River this summer [because of a sighting]. We were unable to get a picture but we [saw] many . . . flashing lights. . . . Many flashes were parallel to the river. . . at that point was a crook in the river and there were many fish feeding . . . [prime] hunting grounds for [fish-eating] birds. Only these things fish at night with bioluminescence. At first I thought I was just seeing many shooting stars but they were all parallel to the river and close to the horizon. Next I noticed that when the cloud cover came in I could still see the flashes. . . . under the cloud cover. . . .

Dinosaur Bird

I saw a featherless flying animal with a wingspan of about 4 1/2 to 5 feet and a long tail with a diamond type shape at the tip of it. No hair or feathers anywhere, just leathery reptile type skin . . . long sharp teeth that somewhat protruded from the mouth like a crocodiles [mouth] when closed.

Dinosaur birds, by any other name

According to Susan Wooten (of South Carolina) and Aaron Tullock (of Texas) and Eskin Kuhn (of Ohio) pterosaurs are very much alive. Those three eyewitesses have given out their names after being interviewed by the same cryptozoologist: Jonathan Whitcomb (of California). And not one of those three witnesses are dishonest or insane or even mistaken in their interpretations, according to Whitcomb.

Pterosaurs in the East U.S.A.

A modern pterosaur species, or number of species, are seen in many states of the U.S.A., including the eastern states like Maine, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

Pterosaurs in Virginia

“. . . taking a camping trip with my boss and his friends, and I believe it was near the Maryland-Virginia line in the Chesapeake area . . . My boss and I suddenly saw . . . a flying object that was strange. Why? Because we knew it was quite far away, but it was as big as a regular bird would appear up close. . . . amazement took over. It flew directly over us, about twenty yards above us . . . it perched on a tree about fifty yards past us. . . . This [pterosaur] had a pterodactyl protruded head and a rhamphorhynchoid diamond-tipped tail . . . wing-tip to wing-tip, about 12+ feet? I don’t even know if I’m close. And the length, I’d estimate about 10 feet?”

Live Pterosaur in North Carolina

“I was driving home from dropping a friend off at school . . . (passed the Food Lion on Commerce Rd, going towards Country Club Rd in Jacksonville, NC), I saw something HUGE above me in the sky.  It looked like a pale greenish white and smooth-skinned. It didn’t appear to have any feathers, and it had the tail with the diamond shape on the end.”

South Carolina Pterosaur

Susan Wooten was driving . . . to the town of Florence, on a clear mid-afternoon in the fall of about 1989 . . . Where the road was surrounded by woods and swamps, Wooten saw something flying from her left, then passing in front of her . . . “It swooped down over the highway and back up gracefully over the pines,” but its appearance was shocking: “It looked as big as any car . . . NO feathers, not like a huge crane or egret, but like a humongous bat.”

Modern Pterosaur in Georgia

Fifteen miles of her commute is on a two-lane 55-mph road through woods alternating with pastures . . . The southeastern United States had just been hit by Fay [a serious storm] . . . when PS drove to work on August 27, 2008. . . . this weather disturbance may relate to her daylight encounter with an animal I believe to be nocturnal.

. . . an animal suddenly flew from the right, just over the front of her car . . . Overall, the animal was tan, similar to the light brown of the local deer, and the color was uniform. . . . [From her sketch of the creature—she is a talented artist] a ridge runs along the underside of the tail. [The tail is long, with a heart-shaped structure at the end.]

Kongamato in Africa

Over recent generations of human natives in Africa, a strange flying creature has caused fear among those who have encountered it and those who have heard of it. The creature is called “kongamato.” Some accounts make it obvious that a living pterosaur is involved, perhaps even more than one species.

In 1956 an engineer is said to have seen a kongamato at Fort Rosebery in Northern Rhodesia, in what is now Zambia. At about sunset, he saw two of them flying slowly overhead. The wingspan he thought was about three feet, perhaps a bit more. The length of the kongamato, including beak and tail, was about four feet or a bit more, and it had a long thin tail.

Kongamato Pterosaur and Hoax Possibility

Actually, the author presents evidence that no hoax has been involved.

An account of Kongamato, in Africa, in context with accounts of similar flying creatures in Cuba and in Papua New Guinea, far to the west and east of Africa respectively. It seems reasonable to me that if a modern pterosaur could live in one of those areas, it could live in the other two as well, even though there may be some variation in species, coinciding with differences in opportunities for finding food, etc.

The eyewitness in Sudan saw something in the tail of the creature that reminded him of the tail of a lion. This could have been from observing a pterosaur, in particular a Rhamphorhynchoid tail vane that had some fur; of course that is speculative, but it does make sense.

Pterodactyl in Sudan, Africa

The boy noticed something on the roof of a nearby hut. Lit up by the patio light, perched on the edge of the roof, the creature appeared to be four-to-five feet tall, olive brown, and leathery (no feathers). A “long bone looking thing” stuck out the back of its head, and its long tail somehow resembled that of a lion.

Some people may call this kind of creature  “dinosaur bird” or “flying dinosaur,” but pterosaurs are not really dinosaurs, being a different kind of animals entirely.

Dinosaur Bird

The pterosaur is known by several names in the United States: “dinosaur bird,” “flying dinosaur,” and perhaps the most popular “pterodactyl.” In Papua New Guinea, it is known by many names: “ropen,” “duwas,” “indava,” and “kor.” But what shocks many Americans and Europeans are eyewitness reports that these supposedly “ancient” and “extinct” flying creatures are alive and well and even flying over our heads on rare occasions.

Child Scared by Pterosaur in Cuba

Why believe a six-year-old child who described a huge flying creature unlike any bird or bat? Patty Carson was only about six when she observed, in about 1965, a long-tailed “flying dinosaur” at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. military station in Cuba. Her father, the military commander, did not believe her. She eventually stopped talking about that frightening experience. But in April of 2011, she began talking about it again, for she was no longer alone.

Patty Carson, just weeks ago, learned that she was not alone in seeing a large long-tailed pterosaur at Guantanamo. She learned about the sighting Eskin Kuhn had about six years after her sighting. She got in touch with the cryptozoologist Jonathan Whitcomb, who interviewed her by phone early this month.

Ms Carson is a registered nurse, with nothing to gain by trying to pull off a hoax. If she had been making a joke when she was a child in 1965, why would she now, as a professional nurse in 2011, repeat such a joke? Nobody is laughing. I believe that she saw what she says that she saw: basically the same flying creature that the U.S. Marine Eskin Kuhn saw in 1971, also at Guantanamo.

Gitmo Rhamphorhynchoid

The Gitmo (Guantanamo Bay military base) had modern Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaurs, at least a few decades ago, so the Caribbean may still host such a “flying dinosaur.” I use that non-technical phrase in this post, for those flying creatures, because Patty Carson probably used that phrase or one like it when she told her father, the base commander, about her terrifying experience in 1965, when she and her younger brother saw it.

Confirmed: Modern Pterosaurs in Cuba

“[It was] about thirty feet away. All of us froze for about five seconds, then it leaned to its left and took off with a fwap fwap fwap sound . . .”

The teeth were small but clearly visible . . . About those teeth, Patty said that there were “a LOT of them.”

They [the two children] ran home and told the grownups that they had seen a dinosaur that had flown away. They “started to tell me it was a pelican or frigate bird. NO WAY! It was as tall as a man when it stood up on it haunches.”

Modern Pterosaur Verified in Cuba

We lived at the end of the road, last house, by the radio tower. We were walking from the boat yards toward home, but still closer to the boat yards, to where it was sandy underfoot, sparse scrub vegetation around four feet tall . . . There were some stagnant pools here and there, a few inches deep . . . We were walking through that scrub area, and suddenly it sat up, as if it had been eating something or resting. The head and upper part of its body, about a third of the wings at the joint (tips still held down) showed.
