Pterosaurs in Georgia

For years people in Georgia have seen flying things unlike birds, sometimes creatures with long tails and no feathers and too big to be a bat. Sometimes a person will notice something like a head crest at the back of the creature’s head, or something that may be called so.

It seems many people must have seen these flying creatures but are reluctant to say anything to anybody or at least to anybody who reports the experience to any newspaper. Well, maybe some people do, but the newspapers don’t often print stories about persons who see live pterosaurs. I get this idea from those who do report sightings. Some of them have had multiple sightings over several years, in the state of Georgia, in certain areas like Towns County and the countryside between Winder and Athens. Those areas have had so many sightings from a few individuals, that other people in those areas must have also seen the creatures.

Blue Ridge Mountains

David Schroder has had several sightings in northern Georgia, in the past few years. Live pterosaurs are a strange sight to report, but this man is not strange just because he has seen them. Other eyewitnesses have been with him to see what appear to be pterosaurs. He’s probably just brave enough to report these things to other people. Thank you, Mr. Schroder!

Pterosaur Sightings Hot Spot: Georgia

This “Live Pterodactyl” post has a little information on the Franklin, Georgia, sightings of 2012.

A Modern Pterosaur in Georgia

This has information on the first two sightings by Sandra Paradise, east of Atlanta, although this post does not give her real name, for it was written before Ms Paradise granted cryptozoologists permission to use her name.

Modern Pterosaurs Seen in Georgia

“There’s nothing new under the sun.” Recent reports of modern pterosaurs, or large featherless creatures, in Georgia are not that new.

While Driving, Watch out for Pterodactyls

A few years ago, a lady was driving to work, through a forested area of Georgia, northeast of Atlanta, when she was startled to see a huge long-tailed creature fly in front of her car.

Pretended Abduction of Baby by Bird

A Golden Eagle or some other large predatory bird is seen to carry away a toddler in a Youtube video called “Golden Eagle Snatches Kid.” It’s been shown to have been just a pretended abduction. The shadows do not match up with each other, in all instances.

Before the pretended eagle gets close to the ground, the shadow is in front

Here, the shadow of the bird is behind, to the right, of the bird

After a brief flight near the ground, the bird’s shadow is behind it

The angle of the camera turn is much too small to have been the cause of the different shadow directions in this video. It proves that this is not an unaltered segment of home video, as it appears to many observers to be.

Soon after the uploading of this Youtube video, an animation studio in Montreal came forward with how it was created. Computer animation was what made it appear that a bird and a baby were in the video. No abduction ever took place.

This presents a serious problem for any future photographer or videographer of a living dinosaur or living pterosaur. How will that person get past the skepticism that will result from observers knowing about this Youtube hoax that looked so convincing?

Multiple Eyewitnesses of Pterosaurs

The latest analysis of the latest findings on sightings of pterosaurs indicates most sightings are not by lone persons, contrary to what had previously been believed. This is important for establishing a particular kind of credibility with eyewitnesses.

From the research of cryptozoologist Jonathan Whitcomb, from sighting accounts from various countries of the world, we learn that 53% of the sightings were with two or more persons (47% were of lone eyewitnesses). This casts severe doubt on allegations that eyewitnesses have been less than mentally healthy or have hallucinated a “flying dinosaur.” When two or more eyewitnesses encounter a live pterosaur, the possibility of hallucination is practically eliminated as a viable conjecture.

Pterosaur Observed in Hawaii

“My wife and my nephew both saw one about 4 years ago. My wife never lies, and I talked to them separately. Both described it exactly the same ! Between 3-4 foot wing span, sharp, long beak, featherless wings more like a bat than a bird, almost transparent, a fleshy, brownish pinkish grey color, and legs that laid straight back and fairly long, and (I knew what it was because of this!) a long featherless tail with what them described as Diamond on it’s tip !!! They saw it fly directly over them at between 60-100 feet.”

The proposal by some antagonists, that hoaxes caused sighting reports, is countered by Whitcomb’s data on wingspan estimates.

Scientific Evidence for Modern Pterosaurs

We need to be aware of the possibility of a number of species of pterosaurs living in various parts of the world, extraordinary as that may seem to many Westerners.

Cryptozoology Book

Live Pterosaurs in America, 3rd edition, by Jonathan Whitcomb, available online

From the Acknowledgements page:

In the United States of America—that’s where Scott Norman, in 2007, became the first American cryptozoologist to see a clear form of a living pterosaur while searching for one: a large flying creature with a head three to four feet long. We mourn the passing (from natural causes) of our young friend who is deeply missed in the cryptozoology community.

I give special thanks to Duane Hodgkinson, whose unflinching testimony gave birth to modern living-pterosaur investigations. His account of the 1944 sighting on the mainland of Papua New Guinea helped inspire Carl Baugh’s first expedition of 1993. Ignoring previous ridicule from those who would not listen, Hodgkinson told us of his experience, helping prepare the way for many expeditions in the southwest Pacific.

From a reader of the second edition:

This is an updated review of the book and I am changing my rating to 5 stars. This book has been on my shelf for almost a year now. I pick it up every now and then and a part of me becomes more impressed by the book every time. . . .

I highly recommend this. You may find yourself almost believing in it, although that is not even the authors intent! Whitcomb painstakingly reviews every account for credibility and reason. This man is not a crank. He tries to weed out would be hoaxes and miss-identification. This is not a guy looking to create evidence to confirm his own beliefs. On top of this, I have great respect for a guy who follows his dreams so passionately. He has traveled to Papua New Guinea to search for the creature there and this book is somewhat of a sequel if you will.

Pterosaurs are not Manta Rays

No offense to cryptozoologists who might want to believe in the following interpretation of Manta rays, but those fish are nothing like what eyewitnesses see when they report flying creatures they call “pterodacyls.” Jumping fishes, even the strange Manta rays, look far different, completely different, and they fall back into the sea within a very few seconds. Also, those fish do not fly over trees, far inland from any sea or large body of water.

Late-2006 Indava Expedition

The American explorer Paul Nation, searching for living pterosaurs, has probably traveled to Papua New Guinea more than any other cryptozoologist. His first two expeditions were on Umboi Island, but his third was deep in the mainland, high up in the mountains. This 2006 expedition was far away from the nearest coast, in rain forest jungle where Manta rays cannot live.

His interpreter, Jacob Kepas, and a local guide hiked up a mountain and got a distant view, in daylight, of an indava that was apparently sleeping on a cliff. It was similar in size to a small airplane. It was obviously no oceanic fish up there on that mountain.

1944 Finschhafen “Pterodactyl”

Duane Hodgkinson’s encounter just west of Finschhafen, New Guinea (many miles east of the 2006 sighting above), shocked him and his army buddy. They had no expectation of witnessing a giant flying creature that was too big to be any common bird and far different. The creature tool several steps with its feet and long legs, before it got into the air. The “pterodactyl” flew up over the jungle canopy and within a minute or so (maybe less) it flew back in the opposite direction, over the clearing and then over the jungle canopy.

It had a tail “at least” ten or fifteen feet long. It also had a long neck and a long appendage, horn-like, coming out of the back of the creature’s head.

And critical to evaluating the Manta ray hypothesis, the jungle clearing where Hodgkinson saw the creature was not by the beach but inland, west of Finschhafen. No mental gymnastics of the imagination can cause that creature to transform itself into a Manta ray fish jumping out the sea.

1971 Bougainville Sighting

Brian Hennessy’s encounter on Bougainville Island, New Guinea, surprised him, for he had no reasonable explanation for what he had observed. It was a large creature flying over his head, a creature that gave him a distinct impression of “prehistoric.” It had a long tail, a long neck, a pointed head crest, and no feathers in sight.

Hennessy’s sighting was nowhere near the sea but up on a mountain road. No, he is not crazy; he is a psychologist.

Manta Rays or Modern Pterosaurs?

I have trudged through the rain forest of Umboi Island, the same island where these two sightings took place, and can testify that “tree-top level” is much higher than the ten feet or so that a Manta ray can jump out of the water.

Do Manta Rays Fly Over Land? No!

I wish to acknowledge the concept of jumping Manta rays. Of course they could look shocking to a person in a boat who had never before seen such a fish, below or above the surface of the sea. But Mr. Drinnon misses the critical point, that the overall picture of pterosaur sightings could not have been jumping fishes.

No Manta Ray Misidentification

The misidentification of a Manta ray oceanic fish does not adequately explain any significant pterosaur sighting, not even one sighting that I have analyzed.
